Career Pathways

The Architecture extended major provides a range of employment opportunities, including architecture (with further study), urban design (with further study), architectural drafting, architectural education/academia (with further study) or government policy. You could work in architectural and urban design practice, city and regional planning, government agencies, higher education, property development and architectural illustration and modelling.

Further Study

If you complete the Architecture extended major at a high enough level, you can proceed to the Master of Architecture. The MArch is accredited by the Architects' Boards in each state and territory and is recognised by a number of international accreditation bodies. Completion of an Architecture major to a high enough standard can also lead to further studies in Urban Design (master's, graduate diploma or graduate certificate), Building Information Modelling (master's or graduate diploma), Master of Landscape Architecture (requires additional conversion units), or a Graduate Certificate in Architectural Conservation.

  • Completion of a UWA bachelor’s degree with a WAM of 60 per cent and extended major in Architecture.

[1] This pathway is also available through the Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours). Students taking this pathway require an ATAR of 98.00.

[2] Bachelor of Philosophy students will take an additional year to complete this pathway.

English competency

English is the language of instruction and assessment at UWA and you will need to meet the English language requirements of the University to be eligible for a place.

Minimum overall IELTS score of 6.5, with no band less than 6.0.

Course details

Architecture provides a rich experience in creative thinking across a broad set of studies bridging the Humanities and the Sciences. It can be defined as the conceptualisation and design of individual buildings and urban landscapes in response to existing and emerging social, economic, environmental and technological needs.

About the course

The Architecture extended major prepares you for postgraduate studies by introducing a range of technologies and production methods that encourage you to imagine different design outcomes and to create drawings, models and prototypes.

Through a range of partnerships, you'll have opportunities to learn with guidance from leading international and national architectural firms, as well as local government departments and councils. You can enjoy overseas study opportunities – recent destinations include Lisbon, Singapore, Bangkok, Athens and Harbin. The School has a large international exchange program, which continues to grow.

Your degree options

This extended major is only available within the Bachelor of Environmental Design or Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) degrees. You are not able to pair this extended major with another major.
