Our Urban Design graduate program is the first of its kind in Western Australia.
The increasing urbanisation of the world brings with it a complexity of interdependent issues which pose unique design problems.
As a result, we need highly-creative, urban-design professionals to deliver solutions that address both current and future needs.
The future of Western Australia and the world depends on creating more liveable and sustainable cities and neighbourhoods with quality urban places - where residents can come together to restore a sense of community and civic engagement. This is going to take insight, innovation and highly-developed design skills.
Urban design is focused on the physical elements of place and for this reason, is closely related to the professions of architecture, landscape architecture and urban planning. However, it also invites multi-disciplinary participation from a variety of related fields.
Formal urban design study can be pursued as a route to a career in urban design, or as a different way of thinking for architects, landscape architects, planners or other professionals whose work impacts the shape of the city.
The courses offered in the Urban Design Graduate Program include the:
The unique advantage of this graduate program is that it is offered by the Faculty and is delivered through the Urban Design Centre of Western Australia (UDC) at its off-campus location in the Perth CBD.
Building on the established academic and research strengths of The University of Western Australia, the participation of the UDC in delivering the Urban Design Graduate Program creates additional opportunities for students through exposure to the Centre's design consultancy and research projects.
Teaching staff are drawn from the Faculty, the Urban Design Centre's staff and affiliated professional bodies and private practitioners.
Exposure to the Centre's design consultancy and research work offers students the opportunity to work directly with communities and practising design professionals on significant current projects.
The UDC is a partnership of The University of Western Australia and the state Department for Planning and Infrastructure, focusing professional and academic resources on improving the quality of urban places in Western Australia.
