Students develop in-depth understanding of urban design theories and issues, techniques of urban analysis, and skills for the design and development of cities and urban places.

Through the thesis they design and implement a process to resolve a complex design problem, develop a new technique and/or expand understanding of a significant urban design issue.

This course is available to re-enrolling students only. Commencing students in 2012 should refer to the Master of Urban Design (by dissertation and coursework) course.

The Master of Urban Design by coursework comprises the following core units:

• URBD8802 Urban Design Studio (12 points)
• URBD8803 Urban Strategies Studio (12 points) ¹
• URBD8804 Urban Design Workshop (12 points)
• URBD8805 Contemporary Urbanism (Twentieth and Twenty-first Century)
• URBD8806 Readings in Urban Design ¹
• URBD8807 The Forces that Shape Cities
• URBD8808 Case Studies in Urban Design
• URBD8820 Urban Design Research Methods

and units to the value of 12 points from the following:

• ARCT5514 Non Euro-American Architecture
• PLNG4401 Planning Theory and Practice
• PLNG4402 Planning Law
• LACH4420 Research in Landscape Architecture

and a thesis spread over one or two semesters:

• semester one or semester two: URBD8801 Urban Design Thesis
• 6 points semester one, 12 points semester two: URBD8811 Urban Design Thesis Part 1 and URBD8812 Urban Design Thesis Part 2
• 12 points semester one, 6 points semester two: URBD8813 Urban Design Thesis Part 1 and URBD8814 Urban Design Thesis Part 2

Admission requirements

Admission to the Master of Urban Design by coursework requires one of the following:

• a relevant Bachelor’s degree from this University or another recognised institution
• the Graduate Diploma in Urban Design with an average mark of at least 60 per cent, or equivalent as recognised by the Faculty, on the recommendation of the UDP Academic Committee
