Universal Dynamism II (2008)

Expanding on my earlier reconsidering of the action movie genre as having artistic merit (via a hybrid film highlighting the predominance of movement and de-emphasis on story/narrative in both experimental and action movie cinema), Universal Dynamism II looks beyond the boundaries of screen culture and into performance and painting to explore movement and time across media.

Pivoting on a process-based performance piece where a canvas was painted via a bloody and theatrical fight, a series of works were constructed both in pre-production ‘sketches’ (such as equipment and paint tests), as well as the aftermath painting and meticulous editing of the filmed documentation. The result is a singular piece made up of various elements that then programs a narrative outside of the works via a museological approach to its presentation.
