At the end of each year, our School allocates each student a progress status category, taking into account their results in all units that year.

General rules

Rules in relation to completion of a unit, assessment and examination, including advice of results, missed examinations, appeals and similiar issues are covered by:

Satisfactory progress

University General Rule 1.2.1.29 states that to make satisfactory progress students must:

  • (a) pass units to a value of at least half the total value of units in which they remain enrolled after the final date for withdrawal without academic penalty [see Rule 1.2.1.2(2)]
  • (b) satisfy any additional requirements which a School determines and states in its rules.

In addition Rule 2.2.1.4 states that for those enrolled in the bachelor degree course:

  1. Students who, in both semesters for a calendar year, remain enrolled in a design unit after the final date for withdrawal without academic penalty, must pass at least one of those design units.
  2. Students who fail a Design unit must pass that unit at the next attempt

Rules 2.4.2.7 states that for those enrolled in postgraduate courses:

  1. Students who fail a design unit must pass that unit at the next attempt.

Progress status categories

The following abbreviations may appear on your results. The procedures listed must be followed in each case.

Good Standing

You have made satisfactory progress and you can enrol for the following academic year.

The following is a summary of Progress Status categories which may be awarded by the Board of Examiners to those students who do not make satisfactory progress.

SU - Suspended

Students who fail to make satisfactory progress for the first time may be given the status of 'Suspended' for a period of 12 months.

Students will be permitted to automatically return to study following the period of suspension with a progress status of 'On Probation'.

Normally, a student will not be allowed to re-enrol until the term of the suspension has expired, however the Board of Examiners has empowered the Manager, Student Office to cancel suspensions in those cases where a student can show that there were mitigating circumstances contributing to an unsatisfactory year.

If you believe that you are in this category you should contact the Manager, Student Office as soon as possible and no later than 20 University working days after the release of results.

You will be required to provide a letter to the Manager, Student Office setting out the circumstances leading to your unsatisfactory performance and the steps you will take to improve your future academic performance.

If your request for cancellation of suspension is upheld, the School may still impose restrictions on your re-enrolment, and award a progress status of 'On Probation'.

OP - On Probation

Students who fail to make satisfactory progress in any year and are permitted to re-enrol the following year, or students who serve a period of suspension may be awarded the progress status of 'On Probation' upon re-enrolment, and must meet any conditions determined by the Manager, Student Office.

EX - Excluded

Students who fail to make satisfactory progress for a second or subsequent time may be given the status of 'Excluded'.

Following a period of exclusion of at least 12 months, the student may apply to the School to be considered for re-admission.

No guarantee is given of re-admission after a period of exclusion.

Dissatisfaction with an assessment result and/or progress status

In the case where there is dissatisfaction with an assessment result and/or progress status, students should refer to the UWA Secretariat for advice and assistance.

UWA Secretariat can provide advice in relation to policy and procedures for lodging an appeal against an academic assessment or progress status.

Contact the Manager, Student Office to discuss your results.

You only have 20 University working days following the release of the relevant result / progress status in which a formal appeal may be lodged.

Please be aware that if you were unable to access your results because of an encumbrance on your student account (for example, unpaid fees) this is not grounds for an extension of the appeal period.

Repeated withdrawal

University General Rule 1.2.1.17 states, "Students who withdraw more than once from all units in which they are enrolled are not permitted to re-enrol in any course of the University without the special approval of the School concerned."

In this situation, you are required to obtain the permission of the Manager, Student Office to re-enrol.

Please forward a letter to the Manager, Student Office explaining the reasons for your withdrawals.

Successive failures in the same unit

University General Rule 1.2.1.28 states that students who fail a unit twice are not permitted to enrol again in that unit unless the School approves otherwise.

In this situation you are required to write to the Manager, Student Office to request permission to re-enrol in the unit, explaining the reasons for your poor performance.
